A client recently told me that if I explained the protocol when it comes to receiving a Massage, that more people would feel comfortable getting them... so this is for you Meredith :)

When coming in for a Massage, dress comfortably. Once you arrive at the salon, we will ask you to fill out a short form that details any issues you may have, or health concerns that the Therapist should be aware of. The Therapist will review your form and ask any questions that you may have. This is a great time to let them know your preferences (deep tissue, relaxing, or problem areas to name a few)

The Therapist will take you into our Massage Room (think relaxing music and lights dimmed) and will give you privacy to prepare for the Massage. You can unrobe to your comfort level... some chose to wear undergarments, while others are comfortable without any clothing.

The Therapist will give you a few moments to get positioned on the Massage Bed before re-entering the room. Some Therapists prefer you to start face up, while others prefer to start on your back. Your Therapist will let you know their preference.

We encourage you to be honest and open with the Therapist if you would prefer more or less pressure. The Massage is for you and we care about your comfort and needs.

You will remain covered at all times, except for the body part/ limb that is being worked on. Remember, this is the Therapists craft and they are working on correcting and relaxing your body. There is no need to feel uncomfortable, just breathe and relax...

Once your Massage is complete, the Therapist will tell you to take your time getting up (you need to get up slowly since you will be SOOO relaxed) and will meet you at the door with a drink of water. Your body will need lots of water after the Massage.

I hope this eased any nervousness you may have regarding a Massage! I promise you will enjoy the service and LOVE the results!

Exposure to Cosmetologists and Clients Is Well Below OSHA's Air Level Requirements

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - November 10, 2010) - On October 29, 2010, Oregon OSHA released results of a comprehensive air monitoring study conducted across seven salons. Each case yielded Formaldehyde exposure levels well beneath OSHA's Action Level, Permissible Exposure Level, and Short-Term Exposure Level.OSHA's Action Level of 0.5 parts per million is the most stringent level of exposure set by the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The average Formaldehyde gas exposure level for the seven salons tested by Oregon OSHA was 0.079 parts per million; over six times lower than the OSHA Action Level of 0.5 parts per million.
Sample Case Study #7 (cited directly from Oregon OSHA's recent report entitled 'Keratin Based' Hair Smoothing Products And the Presence of Formaldehyde):

Case 7: The seventh salon had four stations with a false ceiling. No doors or windows were left open and the stylist did not use any fans during the treatment. She did not wear gloves.
br> Breathing zone samples were placed on the stylist during the process, which took 94 minutes. The samples were changed every 15 minutes. Samples were also placed to the right of the stylist, near the stylist's sink and to the left of the stylist. The stylist's peak exposure was 0.471 ppm, while applying the solution. Her average exposure during the procedure was 0.255 ppm and the 8 hour average was 0.050 ppm.

The results did not exceed the 8-hour limit and it is unlikely that multiple treatments would have done so.

CONCLUSION: Air sample tests conducted by Oregon OSHA demonstrate that Formaldehyde exposure levels are safely below OSHA's Action Level."

This is a topic that I feel very strongly about, as do other licensed stylists and salon owners all over the country...
Professional Hair Care Products (such as Redken and Pureology), are not sold to the mass markets; such as grocery stores and drug stores, by the manufacturer. They obtain these products through shady back door deals by stylists trying to make a quick buck, or sometimes from different countries. Take notice next time you are in a grocery or drug store at the quantities of the 'professional' products versus the quantities of 'non-professional' products. The people diverting the professional products only have limited funds and can't supply the regular quantities into these other outlets. Consumers are not getting what they are paying for! In most cases they are getting expired products (which lose their effectiveness), products that are being stretched with fillers or products that may have a toxic bacteria that can be harmful to your health.
The cost of the products are the same or even sometimes more expensive than when purchased in a professional salon! Unfortunately, although they may not realize it, the consumers are devaluing the professionalism of the product and the beauty industry when purchasing these products from the mass markets.

Low-lites Hair Color

Low-lites Hair Color: "These are the same as highlights but darker, rather than lighter than your own hair, produced using tints/permanent colour rather than a lightener. Again there are lots of variations on the terminology so just check your hairdresser's definition when you chat about this type of colouring. Colours range from reds to coppers to aubergines and toffees the range is limitless, you can even get adventurous and try several different colours together.
Low lights are also an option if you want to disguise grey hair but not loose it all together. You can choose a colour that is the same as your natural colour and blend out some of your greys as low-lights will cover about 30 to 50% of your hair. As not all of the hair is coloured the re-growth will not be as strong and so only require touch-ups every 8 weeks plus. Remember the more contrasting the colour you chose to your grey hairs the more often it will need to be done."
